Apologies for the repeat, but I messed up the poll. I'm still interested in how far people in Cambridge typically cycle to work. Not that I think this will get very statistically valid answers of course. [Poll #1414849]

Google maps, and bikely may help you plot your journey to find out how long it is, and here's a map of the boundaries

Feel free to add your commute even if you only do it once a week, rather than every day, and do comment with details if you'd like, or vote in comments if you don't have a livejournal account.

If your commute is entirely outside the city boundaries but you still consider yourself a Cambridge cyclist (perhaps you live in one of the boundary villages?) then do vote, but please comment.

Technically I don't currently have a commute, but this is true for the one I had, even though I didn't do it that often. I might do it some more with the new job, which Google Maps has in the same sort of range.

I commute by bike quite infrequently (about which I often feel guilty). Quite a bit of the time, I'm either taking the girls to school (with too much Stuff to carry on bikes) beforehand, picking them up from school afterwards, or moving all their things between my house and my ex's house.

I sometimes walk rather than cycling because I don't get much other exercise, and the walk at least takes a little more effort!

Back before we had the children, home was in Impington, and work was off Cherry Hinton Road, which was about a 7 mile commute (via my ex's work); back then, we didn't have a car, and commuted by bike every day. I rather miss that (and being fit enough to survive it). On the other hand, the day when there was heavy snow and it took 2 hours to get in was a bit exciting. We were rather disgruntled that my ex's boss didn't go into work because of the snow -- she lived about 200m away -- and anyone with a company car was told not to come in, too. (My boss came in on cross-country skis, though :-)

I commute 4.5 miles every day by cycle, but in the original UK university city. ;-)

Hey, if it's still supported it's still valid, right?

I have a complicated 3-leg commute: home-work (1 mile), work-childminder (1.5 miles), childminder-home (1.5 miles). So any one leg is 1-2 miles, total is 4 miles.

But actually I almost never cycle-commute these days, I walk instead.

No longer in Cambridge. However, when I did:

David Bull Way to Trinity Hall - a little over 3 miles, crossed boundaries.
King's Hedges to Trinity Hall - a little over 2.5 miles, inside city boundaries.

3.2 miles each way as the cycle computer flies; my employer is inside the city boundary, but only just.

For me it's 2.8 miles outwards and 3 miles back, so I wasn't sure whether to mark 2-3 or 5-6 miles ...

My commute goes out through the city boundaries and then back in again (twice), so I selected "Yes" for the second question.

Misread the poll and hit 3-4 miles. It's a hair under or over four miles (edited to add: each way), depending on the route I take (http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/My-commute309730 says 6.1km, but there are loads of ways of making it ever so slightly longer).

It's about as far as you can go in a straightish line and not leave the city, though!

:) I assume so, in the sense that I go from Cambridge to not-Cambridge. But I was filling out polls quickly and ticked "don't know" in the sense that I just assumed, for all I know the boundaries could be somewhere completely non-intuitive to me :)

A few years ago I used to cycle from Sawston to Cambridge, which google maps tells me is 8.5 miles and took me 40 minutes. I always meant to get faster but I was too lazy to. I don't move anywhere with that length of commute in the future (not so much for the annoyance job-wise, but for getting back into Cambridge for evening activities). Although I know plenty of people think nothing of 40 minutes travel.
