I commute by bike quite infrequently (about which I often feel guilty). Quite a bit of the time, I'm either taking the girls to school (with too much Stuff to carry on bikes) beforehand, picking them up from school afterwards, or moving all their things between my house and my ex's house.
I sometimes walk rather than cycling because I don't get much other exercise, and the walk at least takes a little more effort!
Back before we had the children, home was in Impington, and work was off Cherry Hinton Road, which was about a 7 mile commute (via my ex's work); back then, we didn't have a car, and commuted by bike every day. I rather miss that (and being fit enough to survive it). On the other hand, the day when there was heavy snow and it took 2 hours to get in was a bit exciting. We were rather disgruntled that my ex's boss didn't go into work because of the snow -- she lived about 200m away -- and anyone with a company car was told not to come in, too. (My boss came in on cross-country skis, though :-)
