So, I've bitten the bullet and applied for a new job, still within the university but with the UIS (central computing) rather than with the Engineering Department.

I don't know yet if I'll even get an interview, never mind get offered the post, but it's worth a try. It's a grade higher than my current post, strongly related to some of the work I currently do, and looks like it would be a good move. My boss is sympathetic, and other friends and colleagues have been very encouraging (including offering CV and covering letter feedback - many thanks!).

One thing I realise made me more likely to apply for this one (apart from it being a better match for my skills than most) is that it's a permanent role, rather than a two or three year contract, and they've explicitly said they welcome applications for flexible working. Both of those things make a huge difference as to whether I think I can risk moving jobs. I wonder how many other people are put off by the precarious nature of short term contracts?

Fingers crossed for you. I agree that permanent roles, and language making clear flexible working can be requested, are helpful. Both were features of the internally-advertised role I've just started - on a part-time basis!
