Pregnancy as a greengrocer!

Each week my app from babycentre tells me how big my growing fetus is, and then compares it to the size of a fruit or vegetable - usually in length though occasionally in weight. These have been amusing me greatly, but I've already forgotten half of them, so I thought I'd look them up and post them all together.

• 2 weeks - fertilisation - ball of cells aka blastocyst - too small to compare
• 4 weeks - possibly discovering pregnancy - now an embryo - poppy seed
• 5 weeks - sesame seed
• 6 weeks - lentil
• 7 weeks - half and inch long - blueberry
• 8 weeks - kidney bean
• 9 weeks - 2cm - grape
• 10 weeks - now a fetus - 3 cm (head to bottom) - no comparison given!
• 11 weeks - 4 cm - fig
• 12 weeks - 14g - 5cm - lime
• 13 weeks - 23g - 7cm - pea pod
• 14 weeks - 43g - 9cm - lemon
• 15 weeks - 70g - 10cm - apple
• 16 weeks - 100g - 12cm - avocado
• 17 weeks - 140g - 13cm - weight of a turnip
• 18 weeks - 190g - 14cm - bell pepper
• 19 weeks - 240g - 15cm - large tomato
• 20 weeks - 300g - 26cm (head to toe) - banana
• 21 weeks - 360g - 27cm - carrot
• 22 weeks - 430g - "nearly half a kilo" - 28cm - marrow
• 23 weeks - 500g - 29cm - weight of a large mango
• 24 weeks - 600g - 30cm - corn on the cob
• 25 weeks - 660g - 35cm - weight of a swede
• 26 weeks - 760g - 36cm - cucumber (length)
• 27 weeks - 875g - 37cm - cauliflower (weight)
• 28 weeks - 1kg - 38cm - chinese cabbage (weight)
• 29 weeks - 1.2kg - 39cm - butternut squash (weight)
• 30 weeks - 1.3kg - 40cm - head of cabbage (weight)
• 31 weeks - 1.5kg - 41cm - four navel oranges (weight)
• 32 weeks - 1.7kg - 43cm - a fresh coconut (weight)
• 33 weeks - 2kg - 44cm - a pineapple (weight)
• 34 weeks - 2.2kg - 45cm - a cantaloupe melon (weight)
• 35 weeks - 2.4kg - 46cm - a honeydew melon (weight)
• 36 weeks - 2.7kg - 47cm - a large yellow melon (weight)
• 37 weeks - 2.8kg - 48.6cm - a stalk of swiss chard (length)
• 38 weeks - 3 to 3.2kg - nearly 50cm - a leek (length)
• 39 weeks - 3.4kg - 51cm - a mini watermelon (weight)

I'll try and come back and add to this as I progress - though I've also been mentioning each week on Facebook as it happens.

Edit: I now learn that in week 10 my uterus was the size of a grapefruit, which partially makes up for there being no fetal fruit or vegetable comparison that week.

Heh, yes, I remember that. Although I was thinking more of the belly paintings my SIL's sister does. And the way I felt when smallclanger wasn't putting in an appearance - you don't want to know what I measured my circumference as on the day he was due! :D

Looks like my waist is up from around 31 inches to 39 inches so far - could be fun to see how big it gets by the end

3cm... that could be a walnut or a tomato - but maybe tomatoes vary in size too much to be a useful comparison. Walnuts are pretty uniform, in shells that is...

We're still a bit disbelieving about the 15cm large tomato later on! I don't think even beef tomatoes are normally that big.

I like the walnut idea though.

I'm thinking of going out at the end and buying one of each - as close as possible to the recommended size - and taking a photo of them all together. I reckon a 27cm carrot is going to be another hard one to find (as well as huge tomatoes and tiny figs).

I think there ought to be a sprout in there somewhere, and a sprout is between a grape and a fig, so maybe that.

It's a bit confusing that they're going by length not volume, (so presumably by their measure a leek is bigger than a watermelon) — or am I reading it wrong?

I believe it's roughly diameter until week 9, but yes after that it's length. I've no idea whether they'd consider a leek or watermelon bigger, since their sample veg are a bit, well, surprising at times.

I mean, they're measuring the fruit across its longest axis, hence a peapod being "larger" than a lime that weighs many times more.

Oh they did even specifically say "length of" some of the veg, and "size of" some of the others, I'm afraid I rather abbreviated.
