Liverpool St is indeed zone 1, so would actually be slightly cheaper than Zone 3 Tottenham Hale on the Oyster (same price in cash though) - but as you say it would take longer - mind you given they always allow far too much time for crossing London it might well still be possible to get the same train from St P. It would be useful to be absolutely sure whether I was indeed allowed to get off at TH on the ticket I used. But I'm still most cross that the machine wouldn't/couldn't sell me the ticket I actually wanted.
