Going to date myself. Three friends and I did the Pennine Way in 1972. I think you picked some of the best of it though north from Dufton over Cross Fell is also a highlight.

We mostly picked a section which could be done easily by train, and wasn't too long - as we didn't have enough holiday to do all of it. We're thinking of going back and doing the other two sections eventually, but probably we'll do something else next year instead. My knees are still recovering :)

There's a Pennine Cycleway too, but I think that would require me to be rather better at hills on a bike. Not that it goes over the tops quite as much.
