Surgery followup

They've confirmed that the enlarged (and removed) parathyroid was indeed an adenoma: a benign tumour. Also taken a blood sample to check calcium and parathyroid hormone levels are back to normal. They'll write to me and my GP and let me know the results, if so we're all done and dusted. He didn't say what happens if they're still elevated! Also apparently my scar should be all but invisible within 12 months, which is excellent news. It's fairly unobtrusive anyway, all things considered. All good.

In other news I'm actively looking at wedding venues now: have three visits to colleges lined up, all inconveniently on different weekends, but Mum and Dad will be able to come along for one of them. V exciting, and scarily expensive looking!

Hurrah for wedding news! Are you OK about the other stuff?

Yeah, it'll be even better once I get the test results back and can put it all behind me and get on with my life. Still need that last ultrasound to check the kidney stone has really gone too.

What with those and the broken ankle it's been a bit of a funny year health-wise. But I'm certainly feeling healthy otherwise: apart from the ankle and the surgery I've had 2 half days off sick all academic year!

But in general: life's good.

Ah, I remember those magic words - "benign pleomorphic adenoma, margins clear". Although they were as certain as they could be that the tumour I had excised from my salivary glands was benign, it was still a huuuuge relief to get the actual pathological confirmation at my followup appointment.

It's interesting, in this case they pretty much didn't mention the chance of it being a non-benign cancer. I read about it on wikipedia before I knew anything at all, but seem to have more or less dismissed the idea completely since then. Still, I shall thank myself lucky!

Yep, the other thing was that the path report made it clear that they'd got all of it. There's a small but worth-taking-note-of risk that it might regrow and possibly metastasize if bits get left behind, IIRC.

I think the only reason I really considered the malignancy option was that the initial diagnosis was done at the oncology clinic, the kind of place where there are posters on the walls in the waiting room advertising cancer support groups. Cheery!

At the moment we have visits booked for Magdelene, Trinity Hall and Queens, and are waiting to hear back from Downing. Jesus only had one Sunday available in all of August and September, so we're ruling that out for now. If none of these are suitable I'll contact Newnham and Girton too :)
