1. Copy and paste your LJ Friends List into an update and leave behind an LJ Cut.
2. If you've met them in person or otherwise know them from the offline world, bold their screenname. If you've only talked to them on the phone, italicize their name. If you've only talked to them online, leave their name alone. If you have someone on your Friends List who has multiple LJ's, only use one and get rid of the rest from the list. If you met them in person first, underline their name.
3. Post and let other people copy the meme.

Yes, it really was easier to un-bold the ones I've not met offline than to bold the ones I have. I don't think I know anyone I've only spoken to online or on the phone. One or two of the online-only people I don't even know who they are, and they may be repeats.

Whether I met people *first* online is harder. In general oxnetters, ukmisc people, afpers, ucam.chatterers I met online, and some of the Cambridge/London goth/geek axis were met online too. Dougsoc, rpgsoc, cusfs and the remaining goths/geeks account for most of the people I've met in real life first.

You met me IRL before we met online - Blackwells Bookshop Jan 1997 was definitely before I appeared on afp (a day or two later) because I think I mentioned meeting you in my first post there!, and I may have met you prior to that, we never did establish for sure.

Strictly speaking you also met smallclanger before he ever posted to LJ by himself, but it's a tenuous claim. ;-)

Thanks, you were definitely one of those where I wasn't *quite* sure which came first. There are probably others where I've got it wrong one way or the other.

And I think decided since I sent him presents before I'd met him IRL that that counted as having met him online, even if it was only really via you.

I had to check - even those who saw the bump at j4's party or our house actually 'met' him after the creation of his LJ, so I think online is probably accurate for most of his friendslist. :)
