I love Simes and E-J's parties, would be really nice to see them properly, and to catch up with other people who are likely to be there. But me being there would probably make Karen uncomfortable, and perhaps unhappy. I don't want to do that, since I care about her a lot. And I don't want to make things awkward for Simes and E-J either. I'll make my own mind up in the end, but still interested in the general opinion.

AFAIK you have been respectful to [livejournal.com profile] angua's pain, being discreet where necessary. You have nothing to be ashamed about. If [livejournal.com profile] angua decides that she would rather not be in your presence just yet, then that is her choice and she should stay away. It would be lovely to see you. It will be even lovelier to see you happy and enjoying a party alongside people who care about you.

JOOI (and I'm not sure this is actually relevant to the question or anything) do you think she'd react better to just-you rather than you-and-Mike?

Perhaps turning up reasonably early to "show your face" for Simes and E-J, and then finding some other pressing engagement to go to a few hours later might be a good idea. Or would it be the worst of both worlds?

As someone who's tried to play that game before, I've never made it work; you just wind up with everyone feeling awkward and unhappy.

Simes and E-J wouldn't have invited you if they hadn't wanted you there (and it's not as if they don't know about Karen's objections).

Which doesn't answer the question, really, because there isn't a good answer.

Indeed - we only invite people that we want to see to parties, hence why you got an invite.

I was rather hoping to see you there, as I don't get up to Cambridge very often. :0)

As Janet said you wouldn't have been invited if Simes and EJ didn't want you there.

I personally am happy to deal with you either being there or not being there but I do object to you publically discussing my feelings towards you. If you don't want to hurt me then get a little bit of tact, a poll to ask people? What on earth are you thinking?

This is a bit post-facto but; turn up, don't suck face. Cambridge is too small not to turn up.
