Discovered a shocking lack in Mike's cinematic education, so dragged him back to watch The Princess Bride after pizza. I was *very* well behaved, and barely quoted along with it at all. Talked to rjk for a bit when he got back from karate before joining the tail end of post-pizza back at Relativity. A lovely evening.

Wonderful to see good news on LJ today, happy for RDD and Vyvyan: well done both of you.

Eeep! I thought everyone had seen it. (says he who just had to admit to not having seen 'Footloose')

I do not think it means what you think it means. I thought that half the point was quoting along with it. :-)

Glad it was a good evening.

OK, I've never seen The Princess Bride. Should I add it to my Movietrak list (which will mean I actually see it sometime in the next decade or so)? What is so good about it?

It contains swordfighting, over-the-top dramatic lines and silly twirly moustaches. And you will forever want to say:
"I am Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die!"
to random people at bus stops.

Damn. you got there a minute earlier than me with that quote.

Now I look silly.

It allows you to quote along when everybody else quotes it, and feel like part of the in-crowd.

It's actually quite a fun film -- self-spoofing swashbuckling kind of thing -- but better IMHO if you can watch it (at least for the first time) without a roomful of people reciting along with it and laughing in anticipation of every line.

's okay. I've never felt the need to watch it again, but then nor have I felt any great lack in my life as a result of this, so I don't think it spoiled anything. I don't get the Rocky Horror thing either, though, so maybe I'm just too much of a miserable old cow to grok these community-film-watching experiences.

The one time I've seen the Princess Bride was with my research group. One of us was reciting it, admittedly, but he was chiming along auf Deutsch; having seen it multiple times whilst a postdoc in Hamburg.

It was mighty surreal.

What you are is much worse. You're... an INDIVIDUAL!

Hmm, OK. A bit like Rocky Horror then, but in a different sort of way?

Will add it to my Movietrak list, anyway.

Actually, nothing like Rocky Horror :-) I never really understood why people liked that so much.

The Princess Bride is a surprisingly funny film. It has lots and lots of laughs in it and a pretty decent story line. The reason why people recite along with it is because of the quality of the jokes.

It's also one of those rare films where the film and the book enhance each other; you need to watch the film, read the book, rewatch the film.

Have fun storming the castle!

Not quite like Rocky Horror, in that there aren't choreographed pauses for the audience to shout rude things at the characters, and there aren't any songs. But close. And there isn't such a cult about dressing up, although it's a good excuse for swashbucklin' gear.

And the shoes aren't so bloody hard to dance in.

And The Princess Bride isn't usually a thinly-veiled excuse for the sort of "sex party" where complete strangers will rip your clothes off and publicly humiliate you.

That's never happened at any of the times I've seen Rocky Horror - and I generally play the one who does the most taking off of other characers' clothes. I always make sure I know the Brad and the Janet and that they won't mind. You seem to have had very bad luck.

I've never actually been to a Rocky Horror Show Live, but that's because I've heard enough reports of them from other people (and that's people who enthuse about how fun they are) that the very thought of it makes me queasy.

Obviously just NMK.

No, and not very much. It's not very good, and I realy don't get the love affair a great many people seem to have with it.
