It was good to go to pizza last night, even if I didn't get to catch up with everyone I'd have liked to talk to. Post-pizza was nice too. Simon is awfully cuddly, and buys very nice port. I got to see the train-set-in-progress which looks cool. Also marvelled at clean shiny bathroom and amusing engineering instead of the usual flush handle.

As people drifted off we suddenly realised around 11:30 that we had a room full of bridge players. Slightly too many actually, but I was happy to sit out and watch while the other four played a rather haphazard rubber. Several contracts went down by one trick, Colin made game in 4H but had only bid three of them, and then him and Ian scraped back with a 3S contract which should have really been played in 3C by the other partnership. Entertaining to watch anyway. I'm definitely rusty, and not familiar with bidding based on counting losing tricks, rather than simply based on points and length. It's clear it gives slightly more information to play with, but they're definitely still struggling on getting the right bits conveyed.

Stopped shortly after 1, but most of us stayed up talking another couple of hours, a TGGD raised its head, but was remarkably tame, possibly since none of us really believed in god anyway. It made me think about a few things anyway, though I don't know if I was at all convincing. And when Ian and Clare went to bed Mike and I stayed up a bit later, talking and not-talking and grinning at each other. Cycled home just before sunrise, with the tiniest sliver of moon in the sky, and venus shining out below it in a pale blue sky. Beautiful. And perfect.

And today I've talked to a couple of people to check they're OK with things. God knows what things exactly yet, I think we're kind of making it up as we go along, but doing our best not to trample too much on anyone else's feelings in the meantime. I love my friends to bits, and it's sad when you can't help hurting them a bit. *hugs*.

Tonight I spent in with rjk, pasta for dinner and then crime telly on Channel 5. Still can't make my mind up about The Shield. I think too much of it tramples on my sense of ethics to make me very comfortable with it. But lovely to spend the evening with Richard anyway, even if he is a mass of aches and bruises. Looking forward to lunch with Jan tomorrow, and dinner out in the evening. Possibly cam.misc meet on Thursday instead of or in addition to the usual pub crowd. And a girly night in with Karen and friends and lots of hair on Friday, which should be fun, but I hope I don't mess up! Still haven't worked out my plans for Saturday. Will see how we go.

I suspect you're working, but if you're around tomorrow afternoon and at a loose end I'll be wandering around Cambridge if you want coffee or something. I should be online for another 30 minutes at least and I'll be free from 2ish tomorrow. Also online a little tomorrow. Maybe see you tomorrow?

Haven't played bridge for ages. I guess you learn the rules and play at a certain level, but then there's a whole other thing about bidding systems and conventions and whatnot which you can get really into. But I didn't :-)

I really ought to find someone to play Bridge with. I keep finding myself at parties with where there are 3 Bridge players (including myself) and so while I know many of my friends can play Bridge, getting 4 of us together is never happened! aaaaargh

The losing trick count works wonders when combined with TNT (total number of tricks) ideology.

There's a way of playing with 3 players, but I've not tried it. [livejournal.com profile] aiwendel could probably explain it better, but it goes something like this;

deal 16 cards to each of three players, discard four for dummy. Each player then discards three cards from their hand, and then bid to see who gets dummy. Play proceeds as normal.

I'm aware of 3-player Bridge (although the way I heard it, it was deal 13 cards to all as normal, with a hidden 13 card dummy) but it turns it into a completely different game as it totally destroys the bidding system, which is where a lot of the game lies. I want 4 player bridge!

I wasn't aware that you and Tish could play Bridge too!

I'm quite a beginner, but I gather that Tish and Oli have been playign for ages.

I expect that there will be bridge at my birthday party; would you like to come? (I would have already invited you, except I'm not sure how to contact you) It's on the 31st of July.

I suspect I may be in Winchester that evening stalking my favourite band, but just in case I'm not (I don't even know where Winchester is!) then please send me an invite to your party! My email is on my LJ userinfo page (and I've finally friended you which is long long overdue).

I can just see the cross-ruffs produced by that game...
