lnr: Halloween 2023 (love)

So today I got up late, had lunch after rjk went out, and spent most of the rest of the day spodding. Mobbsy mentioning the word "tidying" on irc did at least spur me on to put some washing on, empty my glasto rucksack properly, and put the (now dry) tent away. Brushing the mud off rjk's jeans was spectacularly impressive. As is my alpine strawberry plant, must pick the new crop tomorrow, they look great. Having cats next door seems to discourage the birds from eating them too. Pleasant curry-from-a-jar for dinner, which unfortunately had the soapy taste which rjk dislikes in curry. Must read the ingredients list before throwing the jar out, and see if it gives any hints. After that watched last night's crime telly. Videod from terrestrial still because we haven't yet got the video linked up to the digibox. It's all so complicated.

I've heard the taste of fresh coriander (the herb, not the seed, which tastes very different) described as "soapy". I love it, myself.

This sauce contained "spices", so who knows what is in it. I found a couple of web (http://www.sallys-place.com/food/columns/gilbert/cilantro.htm) pages (http://www.gardensablaze.com/HerbCoriander.htm) referring to soapy taste from coriander. Cumin doesn't appear to have the same reputation; perhaps the record on the kitchen board is erroneous? I'm reasonably sure I've had the same taste from things without Cardamom in (though I know that's supposed to be liable to such things).

I've more often heard fresh coriander (which I too love, and can't get enough of) more often called "metalic", though I can see the where the "soapy" comes from as well.

If it's the same soapy taste I dislike, it's cardamom.

I've taken to the faff of throwing cardamom pods into mortal and pestle, bashing them about abit, separating the seeds from their battered pods and then grinding the seeds down before adding them. Its a little bit of a faff, but its probably worth it.

I've always done that - how's that wonderful flavour going to suffuse the entire dish properly if you leave it in hard little bullets?
Only takes a couple of minutes, tops.

Definitely coriander leaf. I can't stand it either. Coriander seed appears to be totally fine and leaf in very very small quantities.

I'm with the coriander lobby - I definitely find that "not quite fresh" coriander of the bottled-curry-sauce variety can develop a soapy taste. Harder to get with proper fresh stuff IMO.
