Paul and I seem to have worked out an ingenious way of getting round copy protection on CDs, or at least to get round the way they implement it by stopping you from playing the CD on your computer.

He'd offered to lend me a copy protected CD you see, so I could test if it would work on my DVD player, before I scrap the CD player. So he popped into the office with a Celine Dion (ick, but it's in the name of science) CD, which is proudly labelled on the front "Will not play on PC/Mac". So I figured what the hell and stuck it in my CD rom drive and hit the play button on the front to see what would happen. It played. But maybe that's just because I'm only playing it in hardware, right? (There's no soundcard on this machine). So he took it back through to his office and tried playing it in software there. It played. So there you go, copy protection (in this case) broken.

Now we just have to find one which *doesn't* just work that I can test. Christi: was it the Mike Oldfield ones you were talking about the other day?

You know it maybe easier to just download the album in MP3 format then burn to CD.

I like your journal, its intresting to read about someone I used to know many years ago.

What I'm basically trying to make sure of is that I won't at some point buy a CD and find it won't play on my DVD player because of some lousy copy protection scheme. Certainly I was under the impression that some of the copy protection out there did essentially make it impossible to play the CD on a PC at all, and that some car CD players had problems playing these CDs too - if car audio devices have trouble it's not beyond plausibility that a DVD player might not work too. I just don't seem to be able to get hold of an example to test the theory.

But glad you find it an interesting journal anyway, I'm dying of curiosity though: I just can't quite put my finger on who you might be! I don't *object* to anonymous comments, but I do so much prefer to know who I'm talking to.

As for the copyright on CD's, there is a trick to beat it and all you need is a marker pen :D
