Perhaps the flying cars will be automated (and perhaps software will be good enough that a sensible person would trust their life to it given a choice ... perhaps one for the 1000 years in the future rather than the 100).

With automation we could probably cram them in tightly enough on the ground, and it would be enormously more efficient. In particular, assuming marvellous software, I'd have machines travelling to a common destination link up fore and aft for space and aero benefits.

The desire for flying cars has very little to do with efficiency of any kind, we just want to live in the future (well, more so than we are already).
