Bizarre behaviour of LJ mail

Hmm, strange. Livejournal is quite happily sending me comment notifications and so forth to the address I have registered with them, however messages to lnr@livejournal.com which are forwarded to the same address are not getting through at the moment: with it complaining that the mail server isn't saying anything quickly enough. Despite it being the same mail server. I've no idea what it's doing differently when forwarding mail that would cause problems.

Anyway, in the meantime I recommend mailing me as eleanorb at either chiark or gmail if you want to get in touch. In fact I'd recommend those most of the time anyway!

nice spam comments you just got from that! Also I haven't had a notification in ages - I think it's all broken.

There does seem to be more of it about lately.

Notifications: bizarre, I've been getting those fine. Hopefully the slight increase in timeout times will help you too.

They're presumably using different back end mail servers on their part, with different configurations for some reason.

Ian suspects they're trying to verify the forwarding address, and that they've reduced the timeouts too much on that. I've mailed them and asked anyway, and they've kindly upped the timeout to 30 seconds! So generous. Apparently it's been configured that way for the last 8 months, which makes it a little embarrassing to only just notice, although I suppose it's possible the conversation wasn't taking so long in the past.

Yeah, but why the heck are they using different checks for forwarding vs sending comments? It's the same email address, which you've either already validated or not. Me dunno. :-) Monkeys, either way.
