Oh dear

Got a call from my mum last night with the sad news that my Grandma has died. She went to sleep yesterday and didn't wake up again. She'd been fine the previous day: out to lunch with my uncle Bob and Carolyn. It's not so bad for her sake: she was missing my Grandad, and she's been getting a lot less mobile lately, and I don't think she'd have wanted to have to go into a home. But still it's awfully sad for the rest of us, and I feel so sorry for my mum (and her brothers) for losing both their parents in the space of 3 months.

Oh, that is sad. But very often happens, I think, that the second grandparent goes very soon after the first. It happened to my granny (who lived with her much older sister and died about three months after the sister).

Indeed, I was going to say the same thing ... the surviving spouse often goes within a year of their partner passing ... and I am happy that it was swift and apparently painless ... sad that it didn't really give a chance for people to say "goodbye" but I hope that everyone pulls together and uses this time to remember them both and to celebrate the family that remains on this side of the veil ...

Sorry to hear that. It does feel weird to be 'pleased' that they go when they're still enjoying life when you're aware that things are getting harder for them. It isn't the right word, but I know exactly what you mean. I was much more sad for my Grandad when he was terribly poorly than when he actually died. I'm glad she had such a peaceful end and hope your grief isn't too painful.
