"I'm tempted to say that what you do with email once it has been sent to you so that you can access it is entirely up to you" - but in fact the convention has always been that to expose personal email is very bad form.

Mail hasn't passed through umpteen servers since UUCP bang paths.

Anyone who thinks the powers that be are interested in their mailboxes probably remembers that in previous decades the powers that be have been perfectly willing to intercept the post and telephone calls of equally minor civil liberties activitists.
