Having grown up near Whitby, and gone there for Saturday afternoons, it always feels rather strange to me to find it such a special place for so many of my friends ;-)
I bore everyone with this particular information, but if you went there by train, you will have gone past the back garden of the house I was born in...
Not far from where I was born either, since that was in Northallerton. Though I mostly grew up near Leeds.
To me going to Whitby for the goth weekend is at least as much for the memories of days there as a kid, since we used to go fairly often - and in winter as often as summer. The only sad thing about going by train (well OK apart from the ridiculous amount of time it takes) is missing that drive, up the A1 to Thirsk, then the A170 to Pickering (via Sutton Bank) and up over the moors.
Shame Google maps don't have more detail of that area.
