Praying at altars seems to be the best bet.

Altars were definitely what worked for me. The three outcomes seem to be "nothing" "blessed" and "bolt of lightning" - blessing adds hitpoints and lightning removes it, but the lightning seems very rare, and you get the blessing maybe about 20-25% of the time?

I died because I got caught in a corner of the dungeon with no altar in, where the only way out was past a monster.
