So I'm attempting my first ever thing knitted from a real live pattern. And I figured it would be a good idea to actually knit a swatch first to check my tension. The pattern says:

TENSION: 21sts and 28 rows

Oh, I think I just solved my own problem. Was supposed to come out as 10cm on 5mm needles. And my piece is about 8.5cm x 13cm. But then I did 28 sts and 21 rows. Muppet.

I was wondering what one should do if ones tension is out completely in one direction and the opposite way in the other but I guess it's probably not too far wrong. Best knit another "square" just to be sure though

LOL! I had to read that twice to see what you'd done wrong, too. ;-)

Oh, but I would add - you're better off casting on something like 40 stitches and knitting 35 rows and then measuring a 10cm square in the middle of the fabric to see how far off you are, because you don't get such a good idea of the tension you're producing otherwise. (Cast-on edges are often tight, you might be knitting artificially looser as you see yourself nearing the end of the swatch, and so on.)

What the sheep said. Plus, remember you can undo the tension square so you don't waste wool (if that kind of thing bothers you)
