Busy week(s)
Feb. 12th, 2022 10:22 pmSo, my colleague John has been away for a couple of weeks, so I've been sysadmin in charge of care and feeding of the infrastructure linux systems, including virtual machines and their hosts, while he was gone. In that time somehow we managed to survive through:
* kernel patching the servers hosting all the virtual machines, and many of the machines themselves
* getting Dell to send me a patch for the iDrac controllers, and installing it
* a serious incident where half the VM fleet was on a go-slow, resulting in web services grinding to a halt
* running up a new machine for a colleague, who wanted Ubuntu, rather than the Centos/Rocky I'm familiar with
* keeping up with existing projects in the meantime
Phew!
You'd think when Friday came round this week I'd go flop, and I did try - with a coffee and cake at Scotsdales after dropping Matthew at school (first this term!), but then I was reminded I was supposed to be at Addenbrookes giving a blood sample for a research study, so I dashed off to get that done, and then chilled out with my knitting until Jack and Rachel came round to have a cuppa and pick up something in the car. It was lovely to sit and chat in the sunshine in the garden.
And today I cycled into the village at lunchtime to get a necklace repaired at the Repair Cafe, which was a qualified success. The chain is so fine it's barely possible to close the replacement links enough that the original ones don't just escape through the join, but we'll see! We've also played lots of Terraria, and Mike went out for a party leaving me and Matthew to order pizza while he was out :)
Monday brings strikes, and I'll be on the pickets for at least some of the time, even if I can't face picketing every day (as I've often tried to do). We're *so* close to being able to get an agreement on pensions at least that should be acceptable to all, but just not quite close enough. One VC has accused us of just *wanting* to strike, but we just don't want cuts to go through at the end of this month unopposed.
It does mean I need to try and *stop* thinking about work though ;)
