Ah see I don't think of SF and/or Fantasy as the only routes of escapism. I was just as much drawn up into this and taken away from myself as I am with anything by Ken MacLeod or Alastair Reynolds or whoever.
Oh and I note my mum does like Iain Banks' writing, and really enjoyed The Crow Road, but also read Complicity I think and found it rather too nasty for her taste, which is why she thinks I should be reading fluffier things while feeling down.
I think to be honest a bit of variety in what you read is a good thing, so I don't mind her lending me things, and just find it mildly amusing.
