I think I have 15 icons now. I don't seem to use all of them equally often, and sometimes look at the subject of a posting and find myself wondering which one fits best. But I'm curious as to what you lot think (OK blame yonmei). So:

Are there any of them that you think are definitely "me"? That really suit me in some way or another.

When you look at your friends pages do all my icons immediately let you know it's me, or do you have to check the name too for some of them?

If I was going to add another icon which one do you think should go to make room for it? Which one(s) should definitely stay?

Not sure about checking the name, I tend to see the name first because I'm reading top-to-bottom, left-to-right (unsurprisingly) so the image just appears out of the corner of my eye at first.

The duck one always gets me confused even though I've seen the name, though, because I think it's more like Richard. Cognitive dissonance rather than actually getting the two of you mixed up though. The one of you when you were tiny doesn't seem particularly 'you', nor does the one of the green ladybird thing (though I'm not sure I've ever seen that 'in the wild' as it were). Don't think I've ever seen you use the nice boots one either for that matter.

The little goth doll one is probably the one I'd think of first if asked what your LJ icons were.

Ah, now I realise you use a style with the icons on the right that first paragraph makes more sense. Reading left-right for me the icon is the first thing you see.

I'm still getting used to freon, duck and cake, but I am sure they will become you in the lj part of my head. I have my friends with different background colours in the bar at the left to suit them (eg j4 is purple and scouting ones are murky green) - helps me see where entries begin and end as well as going "oh that's bright red, she'll have something interesting to say."

I also tend to see the name either first or at the same time, but from a distance (ie can make out blurry pic but not text) I tend to know who is who, and do recognise yours.

I have nearly 50 icons now but most of them are smallclanger. Or animals, real or not. Dunno quite what that says about me...

I think that demonstrates the extent to which I use subtler (probably not conscious) features to recognize people than turn up in pixelated dolls...

The ones I'd ditch would be Freon, Newcat, shadow, the three-year-old (that one *always* makes me have to look at the name), and possibly the cake and the LNR dome thing - I can't tell what that's meant to be.

I like the goth dolly, it is artificial but it's recognisably you and hey, the web is all about artificiality, right?

Deely-boppers is a really brilliant image and deserves to stay :)

Southpark is a good thing to have as an icon because it works well miniaturised, and again is recognisable as you; you can look up the right name from mental context pretty easily.

I really like Newcat personally. It's a very me picture.

I'm not sure I've seen all of them in use, as I tend to use lynx to read. The one of you being ikkle I might not recognise, but then I don't think I've seen it in use. All the others I'd come to recognise quite quickly, I think.

"me" - total recognition, it's you, good.
"southpark" - learned to recognise it, good.
"shadow" - too much shadow, unclear
"three" - hopeless, since it looks like someone else
"window" - looks enough like spyhg that I always think it's her.
"nekkid" - OK
"Newcat" - OK
"ranma-chan" - used to this one, good
"doll" - used to this one, good
"deely-boppers" - looks like you, good
"LNR" - good
"duck" - no good, RJK is the duck
"freon" - huh?
"nice boots" - too widely done elsewhere.

freon has been living on top of my monitor for around 4 or 5 years now, as a cooling device. I'm sure people will get used to him :-)
