Nearly no longer working hours and still no telly, what's the point of telling us what day they'll deliver and then not turning up until this late? Have spent the day mostly staring at:

Have got it down to only 8 we don't yet have plausible answers for, which is not too bad going, even if it did requite both of us. Will keep trying. Have also been ripping CDs, new drive isn't half quick! The encoding is rather slower mind. Sad not to see Jan on irc today, but I can understand. Wish I could do anything other than send hugs in both her and Sion's direction. Doubt anyone can though.

I wasn't avoiding irc, much less anybody on there. I was working (in the hope that they'd let me go home at lunchtime if I'd got some work done in the morning -- and they did) and then pottering in town and at home -- just didn't feel like sitting in front of the computer any more. Sorry.

Which 8 are you stuck on?

Hm. Only got nr 25 straight off - if you're still stuck with it by Thursday, I'll tell you then. Oh, might have 41 as well.

How are you achieving that? Using gogo (http://freshmeat.net/projects/gogo/) I could do wav->mp3 near realtime on a 90 MHz peecee.

"realtime" isn't fast l-)

No, realtime isn't fast any more. But a recent machine should encode at least at 15x to 20x, maybe twice that, (and IIRC [livejournal.com profile] lnr got herself a new box recently), and somehow I can't think of ripping at more than that as "slow".

still no telly

I think it gets around 4-5x when it's encoding without simultaneously reading the CD. The machine is a 1.3GHz Duron with a cheapo motherboard. The encoder is oggenc 1.0rc3, as compiled by Debian (so it won't have any CPU-specific optimizations).

Interesting. Since my machine is somewhat comparable (1.4 GHz Athlon), I think it's time for me to play around with ogg a bit.

The only one of those that I got was 36. Only 1 major hit; round about 87 or 88.

I've got most of those.

Hmm, 26 was the band to get when CD players first came out.

Gosh, yes, encoding to ogg is slow. If I didn't have to stick with mp3 for various auxiliary equipment anyway, I'd start now ;)
