How do you offer sympathy to someone if neither they nor anyone else has actually told you the thing you want to sympathise about? Other than fretting about that, and the fact I feel like I ruined Becky's birthday by means of the quiz machine dragging everyone away from conversation, it would have been a lovely evening.
