Lovely day: B5 in the afternoon followed by very nice dinner with Becky and far too much gin. Good company, daft mp3s and bits of DVDs.

Slight hiatus in journal this afternoon was due to Richard suggesting it might be better not to be talking about ripping cds publicly in this journal, given it's technically illegal, and him saying it about 2 minutes before we left the house so I didn't have time to think about it or do anything about individual journal entries and figured I'd just delete it temporarily in the meantime. On balance I reckon at this point I either give up entirely and don't bother with a journal at all, or I don't worry too much about it.

This journal is entirely open, apart from the one friends-only post with contact details in. I don't want to change that, and while I might be more circumspect about what I say in future I don't want to go back and erase bits of it either.

Ripping CDs for personal use when you own the CD in question isn't illegal in the UK or the US as far as I am aware ... much as the record companies would like it to be.

It is in fact technically illegal in the UK - the UK-CDR is very pissed off about this.

The Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 (http://www.hmso.gov.uk/acts/acts1988/Ukpga_19880048_en_1.htm), in particular clauses 16 and 17.

Copying your own CDs for personal use may be technically illegal, but I think the chances of anybody caring enough to do anything about it, especially when it's on such a small scale, are practically nonexistent.

I hope Richard's also going to stop talking about his work jukebox on LiveJournal, for consistency's sake -- it may be "friends" only, but you never know who's going to grass you up to the authorities, eh? -- and I hope he's given Simon T. a telling-off as well for talking about CD-ripping.

Sorry but I was really worried when you just deleted the whole thing with no warning & then didn't reply to SMS asking if you were okay. :-(

Sorry, didn't mean to worry anyone. I should have thought that it might. I didn't really think anyone would notice much at the w/e. I left my phone at home I'm afraid, not enough pockets. *hugs*

He was just suggesting it might be better to make that post friends-only, I don't know if he thought about the fact that I don't usually do that for any posts at all. And there is the fact that it implicates him as well in this case, since it's his computer they're all been ripped to, and his software playing them.

As should be obvious on balance I've decided it doesn't matter too much and I won't change those things, but it wasn't a thing I could decide in 2 minutes flat. And the stupid thing is that deleting the entire journal is a thing which can be done and undone really easily, when you can't do the same to individual entries.

Still no bloody sign of it, and I have peered at both exim and SAUCE reject logs and the exim mainlog. lnr@lspace.org just forwards to eleanorb@chiark, but it must have either got lost somewhere on that hop or the one between NTL and lspace. Worrying.
