Photogenic:

Some comments recently made me wonder what people think about themselves in photos:

No: but I invariably hate 99.999% of photos of me. The ones I don't cringe at get stored someplace for those rare occasions when I might willingly share them. (These are mostly >9 years old, and can be counted on one hand... in decimal, not binary...)

I think there's a big difference between photos of yourself (that's you-in-general-rself) and photos of other people. We only ever experience other people's bodily existence externally (no matter how intimate we get with them, we can't experience existing-in-their-body) so we don't get the cognitive dissonance between internal and external experience; whereas looking at yourself-seen-from-the-outside there's a moment of dissonance between this-is-how-I-experience-my-existence-internally and christ-do-I-really-look-like-that? If you see what I mean.

I don't like many photos of me, anyway.

Also, what you see in photos is mirror image of what you usually see of yourself and we are all surprisingly unsymmetrical.

Can't say I've ever noticed that make an appreciable difference.

The thing for me is that it appears to be impossible to take a photo which is recognisably of me and doesn't look horrid. There are horrid photos of other people, yes, but there are also good photos of them.

I tend to have one of two reactions to photos of me: (a) "that looks horrid, and nothing like me", or (b) "that looks OK, but nothing like me". Usually (a).

There should really be a "Depends on my own self-image" to the "do I think they looked horrid" question. There aren't that many photos of me which I like when it comes down to it; there again I don't like myself very much anyway so its not entirely unsurprising.

Still, I'm starting to like bits of my physical appearence these days so there is light at the end of the tunnel (or is that just the approaching train ?)

Yes I appeared in a couple but I'm being very cuddled in one so most people won't know it's me and the other one is ok, but could do better! :)
I wasn't really looking to see if anyone else came out bad, although there were a couple if I really thought about it - but that's more a case of "i'd hate it if that was a piccy of me", rather than "X looks crap in that photo".
And *awww* for the piccy of S+S from your place at Easter! :)

I'm very dodgy about photos with me in, but don't really mind them as long as I'm not likely to see them unprepared while wandering around the web. The worst thing is clicking on a link and suddenly being faced by a picture of me without warning.

I've been thinking about why that is. I guess it's like when I came across a dead mallard on Round Church Street the other day, run over by a bus. I'd rather not have encountered that unprepared, but I don't mind seeing it, because it's what's really there, but give me some warning!

But you do photograph really well (the ones I've seen). I guess lots of us have poor self images. I hate most ones of myself - the best ones are ones I dont know have been taken or ones I'm completely tipsy and goofing off (hmm though some of those should be torn up too *grin*).
