Hmm well that's straightforward enough

I thought of a couple of things I might wibble about on here today, and decided they were probably TMI for anyone but [livejournal.com profile] ewx. So today I created a Friends Group with only me and [livejournal.com profile] ewx in it, daft perhaps if I used this journal primarily for dissemination, given he's sitting right here next to me and I could just talk to him, but at least it gives me proof of concept if I ever want to use friends groups for anything else. And despite the fact many people do seem to use LJ for telling people what's going on in their lives it is a journal still. I might not mind people reading some bits of it but I'm still primarily writing for myself rather than for other people. So it's not completely stupid.

The way I see it if I wanted to write just for myself (not what you said, I know) I'd write a local journal. No point in having my personal thoughts stored on someone else's machine half way across the globe. Thus the "private" option of LJ strikes me as extremely pointless.

I never managed to keep a diary successfully until LJ. I think it's the fact that I feel as though diary writing is mental masturbation to a certain extent. Does this mean that LJ is mental jerking off in public though?

If it's inportant that I remember which group of friends I've posted something to, I out a note in the subject line which corresponds to that group. So you could simply type 'rjk-only' when you posted it, and then check that you had that group selected, and it would be obvious afterwards.:

There's not many places you can jerk off in public, so enjoy it where you can? (Err...)

I find that sort of suggestion coming from an inflatable penguin alarming :)

Given your history with that penguin...

diarysis

I use a diary partly to tell other people (if they care) about what's going on in my life, partly as catharsis, and partly because I find it interesting to look back at what I thought about events at the time. It being writable via a keyboard makes it rather more attractive to write (and much easier to store :), but I wouldn't go as far as mental masturbation...

The "private" option isn't pointless!

I totally agree that it's pointless for writing anything that's supposed to actually be private, but for making test posts to your LJ without thereby spamming all your friends with inane "testing 1 2 3" type wibble, it's invaluable. I've made more private posts to my LJ than any other kind so far. Deleted them all five minutes later, of course, after reading them and making sure they made sense :-)

Given the rubbish I write in my lj sometimes... :)
