I hate mozzies, and other stories

I noticed on the way home last night that there seemed to be more insects around, from greenfly trying to get themselves eaten, or sticking to my clothes to a small cloud of midges hanging around while I was waiting at the level crossing. I don't know whether it was the midges, or an actual mosquito, but I realised once I was home that I had a bit on the back of my left wrist, and I later noticed a pink mark between the first two knuckles of that hand, and a bit of poking showed there was another bite there too. Irritating, but not the end of the world.

Overnight however I seem to have had a rather nasty reaction, a bit like my dad gets, and my left hand is now all puffy right round the first two knuckles, and it's even a bit hard to clench my fist! If it doesn't settle down soon I think I'm going to have to get someone to look at it. I don't mind the itching so much (OK, I lied, I *do* mind the itching) but the fact it actually *hurts* a bit is bad. Though the small bruise on the back of the same hand from my adventures in furniture moving over the weekend probably doesn't help.

Bah!

In rather cooler cycling news I was overtaken uphill (over a railway bridge anyway) by someone on a bakfiets cargo bike with a little girl in the front yesterday - turns out it had an electrical motor to assist the pedalling. Certainly not a quiet one mind. If all electric cars were that noisy you'd not have to worry about them silently sneaking up on you :)

And to finish with another bah, my mobile phone is sulking. I noticed a couple of weeks back that the battery was no longer lasting even 48 hours, so since it was under 6 months old I got Orange to replace it under warranty - assuming it was the battery at fault. Turns out it's still draining the battery in a day and a half even with a brand new battery. Really not looking forward to ringing them up again and getting them to replace the phone!

I got bitten (overnight, I think) on my ankle by something a little while ago, and had half my foot and most of my ankle swell up to double the normal size. I had to get antibiotics, and the doctor commented that they'd seen a lot of infected bites recently...

My dad often reacts like that to bites - but it's rare for me.

Check the phone settings carefully if it's at all smart. I can set mine up to flatten a battery in under twelve hours without trying too hard. Anything that regularly polls the internet for any reason, especially if you're out of Wifi coverage and in a poor location for mobile coverage is going to eat batteries. Some apps remain running even when you think you've closed them, too.

It's a non-smart phone with no wifi or apps, and although I gather it can technically do web connections and emails it's not been configured to do so. I've noticed the screen occasionally lighting up randomly recently, and wondered if that could be causing it. I figured I'd try a factory reset of the settings, but sadly that needs a security code, and the one which is supposed to work for that model (Nokia C1-01) doesn't seem to work. All a bit frustrating. If it weren't for the fact it was only 6 months old yesterday I'd just recycle it and get a new one!

Seriously if anyone does have a recommendation for a properly basic phone model that just does calls and texts I'd welcome it though.

My Nokia C3 started doing this a while back. I had the Wifi turned on without realising and turning it off seemed to fix it.

I only use my phone for calls and texts and the C3 does nicely (like yours, it can do other stuff but i don't use it).

I wish it *had* wifi so I could check if I'd turned that on :)

I'll bear that in mind as a model, but I'd rather have a properly dumb phone, so nothing can get turned on by accident, and so *hopefully* it'll be more reliable, but sadly that doesn't seem to be a common wish these days so perhaps they're just not made that way any more.

Hee, my child-carrying tricycle (not a Bakfiets, a Trikidoo) has an electric assist too :-) I'm sure there are people fit enough to pedal around a large 6-year-old and a four-year-old, but I am certainly not one of them!

Thanks, they did clear up in a couple of days thankfully, and no more so far (touch wood).

And I've even got the dying phone fixed too :)
