For Jim

Jim's been keeping track of how many units of alcohol he drinks a week for a while now. He wondered how other people compare, so I thought I'd add this week up. I don't think I drank anything on Monday, Wednesday or Thursday. Mike might be able to point out anything I missed but I think that's everything I drank this weekend. This isn't really a typical week and I'd probably normally drink less than that in total at the weekend. I've guessed a bit, so feel free to correct me if you think any of the drinks contained more booze than that.

Tuesday: 1 bottle of wine (1.5/glass) = 9 units
Friday: 1.5 pints old bob@5.1% = 4.4 units
          1.5 pints cobra = 4.3 units
          2/3 bottle of XXXX = 1 unit
Saturday: melon marguerita = 3 units
          35ml vodka = 1.5 units
          35ml tequila = 1.5 units
          1/2 bottle wine = 4.5 units
          35ml tequila = 1.5 units
          25ml baileys = 0.5 units
          25ml vodka = 1 unit
Sunday: half of shandy = 0.5 units
          2 glasses wine = 3 units
Total: = 35.7 units

My own sums put me at somewhere between 19 and 25 on a typical week. Last week I think I was at 22-ish. This is usually concentrated on one or two nights.

tsk tsk. I'm glad to say mine is somewhere around zero on a typical week. Cheaper, too.

My weekly totals are pretty scary at times. I'd imagine that last week, which saw me out Weds, Thurs, Fri, Sat and Sun probably took me over 70 units (I've done a rough calc, but that might be an under count). I'd guess that 40-80 would be a typically total for me.

And yes, I'm trying to cut down. I know its not good for me.

Wicked icon :)

As for alcohol consumption I'm way at the other end of the spectrum - a couple of units a week on average, six or eight at most in any single week and most of the time I don't drink at all. I just don't enjoy being either one of drunk or hung over.

The icon is me in the Dev, from about 5 years ago. I'm one of these strange people who have piccys of themselves in almost all of their userpics.

I'm looking to cut way back on my drinking. In fact, to cut out being "drunk" at all. I stopped drinking for 6 months last year, and while I'm not thinking of doing anything that drastic again, I may well take a while off completely soon. Cutting drink out completely can be easier than cutting down, at least in my experience.

One of the things I found when I stopped being a student, and therefore stopped drinking nearly as much because beer wasn't cheap any more, is that it suddenly became much more obvious just how crap hangovers felt - because suddenly they were isolated rather than all blending into one another. Maybe you'll get some fresh observations yourself if you stop for a while..

A pint of 3.5% is 2 units, so 1.5 pints of 5.1% is more like 4.4 units, and 1.5 pints of cobra is more like 4.3 .

3.5% is a premium-strength beer.

In Sweden.

Or certain US jurisdictions.

I suspect they don't charge as much as in Sweden, though.

No. They just make you go to specialist stores (with heavily restricted hours) to buy them.

You mean, a Systembolaget?

Point :)

The IAS has some interesting factsheets (http://www.ias.org.uk/factsheets.html) about alcohol consumption.

That's quite a lot! But I have been put off by reading about liver diseases for the past week.
