I mentioned this to Mike - he uses the train quite often and doesn't remember Shelford having had one at all in the last 4 years. Apparently Whittlesford used to but doesn't any more - because people were spending 5p on a permit rather than buying a ticket, and then *only* paying the fare if stopped - so it essentially becomes a fare dodger's get-out-jail-free card.
